Traction Batteries Explained

Traction batteries are batteries that are widely used for traction or motive applications. They are ideal for use in vehicles like forklifts, material handling equipment, electric golf carts, riding floor scrubbers, electric motorcycles and other electric vehicles.

Characteristics of Traction Batteries

Traction batteries deliver high power and offer relatively high power-to-weight ratio, energy to weight ratio and energy density. They perform well in tough operating environment and have many useful features. Most of the traction batteries are built with a special alloy to withstand extreme service conditions, tough handling and corrosive effects. The heat sealed construction of the battery prevents acid leakages and standard flip top / threaded vent plugs ensure easy acid level observation and topping up.

There are many types of traction batteries available in the market including:

  •     Lead-Acid
  •     Nickel Metal Hydride
  •     NiCad

Due to their mature technology, high availability and low cost, lead-acid batteries have been widely used for motive applications. These types of traction batteries offer relatively better technology and boast a far higher energy density of 30-80Wh/kg.

The other type of battery that is extensively used in commercial vehicles is NiCad. The battery is the main alternative to lead-acid ones and comes vented and sealed. Vented NiCads are ideal for applications which demand long operating lifetimes and minimal maintenance. NiCad can withstand over-discharge or overcharging and perform in extreme temperature variation.
